Every place is unique, every piece of art is distinct and every piece of architecture has a different story. Mohatta Palace is a work of art and a brilliant of architecture situated in the posh areas of Karachi close to the sea. This place has a story and I would like to share it with you here.
Mohatta Palace is located in Karachi in the state of Sindh, Pakistan and was built pre-partition between late 1920 and early 1930. It was built as a summer home by a Marwari Hindu businessman called Shivratan Chandraratan Mohatta, hence the name Mohatta palace.
Mohatta used it for no more than 20 years as a summer home and had to migrate to India after the partition between India and Pakistan and since then this place has transformed from a summer house into a regular house and then a museum holding art and literature festivals and aesthetic displays the local art.
This place has a significance in the history of the country because soon after partition, Fatima Jinnah, sister of the late founder of the country moved into this place making it her home and making it a hub for her political campaign for the presidency against General Ayub Khan the then military dictator. After her untimely death, her sister Shireen Jinnah moved in making it her home. In 1995, this place was purchased by the government of Sindh, and since then it has been transformed into a Museum with an independent board of trustees who decide the fate of this Palace and how best to preserve it.
Here are some of the clicks in my collection that I would like to share with everyone.
